Know your Tech: MicroTCA

The Micro Telecommunications Architecture - MicroTCA is a standard for open modular systems based on AMCs (Advanced Mezzanine Cards); circuit boards that follow the standards of PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturers Group (PICMG) for embedded communications and carrier grade telecom equiment.

Aircooled Motherboard: World's first Motherboard with onboard Powerless Air cooling

Whoa. This is cool. MSI, the motherboard company has introduced what could be the world's first motherboard with onboard aircooler, which requires no power to run! Yup, read no power to run; that's eco-friendly to the core.
The aircooler (still in prototype) is based on the 'Stirling' engine theory, which was invented around the 1600s and uses the heat transferred from the CPU to power the fan, which cools the CPU. Quite ingenious!

The Mac-Aquarium: Aquarium created from a dead Macintosh SE

Mac Aquarium

The Classic Macintosh SEs. It's difficult to forget them; a rare example of beauty with brains in those times where computers looked like they were coming from a war-room.  Okay, maybe we are getting nostalgic, but we have had our brief romantic moments with them and even though they are over their age they can do small odd jobs even today - if you have a working one i.e.

But, what if you have one that is dead? What do you do then? Recycle it perhaps, if you are little imaginative maybe make it into a flower pot or  if you are like John Calhoun, you can make it into an aquarium. And mind you we are talking about an aquarium with live fish, not the screen saver variety. Plain genius we must say,  and for a change it even looks pretty unlike his previous Media Mac concept we featured earlier.

The Hard Drive PC: A CPU Case Made of Dead Hard Disk Drives

Hard Drive CPU Case

There are plenty of things you can do with a dead hard drive - make it into a clock, a grinder or even a door stopper. But, building a CPU case out of a couple of dead hard drives has to be ingenious. If you need instructions check it out here.

Extreme Overclocking: Overclocking Pentium 4 to 7 Ghz

7 Ghz CPU overclocking

The  Italian geeks at PCTuner.net have done what seems almost impossible - overclock a Pentium 4 CPU to double it's rated CPU speed to 7Ghz  or 7104 Mhz to be more precise.  The overclocking technique uses a precisely controlled liquid nitrogen cooling system with a custom container block  and beats pretty much all other overclocking records we know. Head over to PCTuner.net for more details.

Lacie 2 Terabyte (2 TB) External Hard Disk Drive: Whoa. That's Big!

2 TB external hard disk drive with three interfaces - firewire 800, 400 and USB 2.0Quite some time back we had talked about the 1 Terabyte external hard disk drive from Lacie. Surely, 1 TB of data storage is quite enough for most of us, even if you leech gazillions of MP3 files or work with the biggest of  video files.

But, here's something even bigger - the 2 Terabyte external hard disk drive from Lacie.  Packed in a 2U tower size, the 7200 rpm hard disk  drive is built on a RAID-0 configuration and has three interfaces Firewire 800, FireWire 400 and  USB 2.0, a 16 MB buffer size and an average seek time of under 10 ms.  A smart fan keeps the temperature regulated and automatically speeds up or slows down to keep the hard disk cool. Of course, the pricing is also equally big   - US$ 1,899.99. Though currently there is a special price of US$ 1,297.74 on this drive from here (You Save US $602.05)
